This past Sunday we went to Cathlic church for the first time as a new family. We had not gone to church on a Sunday ever without a reason like a baptism or something. We have been thinking about our son's baptism which I am fine with in the Methodist church which I grew up attending but Jorge is more comfortable with the Catholic church. We have decided we would like to give him the tradition of going to church on Sundays like both of us grew up with. It felt really good for both of us to take Tre there.
The "homily" was quite interesting as the priest talked about marriage between man and woman, pre-marital sex and birth control. I've thought about this topic for a while and have come to this... The Catholic church teaches that birth control is not right and that the only acceptable method of birth control is "natural family planning" which they even teach classes on as advertised in the weekly bulletin. Nature... in the church known as "God" gives us women about 5 days each month in which we can be empregnated. On these days He also gives us surges of hormones to make us have sexual relations. So if we do natural family planning we are not having sex on these days and directly denying God's will so we may as well just use birth control which was invented by a smart man who was created by God.
That being said... I have decided to go through with a Catholic baptism and upbringing for my son without completely converting myself.
Hi Jessica,
ReplyDeleteIt is great that you are exploring all your options for your son. That was quite a homily for your first time! Since it was the feast of the Holy Family, it was appropriate and probably a blessing in disguise. You were getting full disclosure into Catholic life! Contraception, NFP, etc. are tough topics to wrap your head around (I know it was for me!). However, once you start to learn more about the "whys" and "why nots" it becomes more like stumbling upon the most AMAZING gift you could ever imagine and less like someone slapping your wrist while saying "No!". If you are ever interested, I'd love to chat or at least email you some information that you may enjoy checking out. You have a beautiful family! God bless!
With love,
Jen
